LVSCNY wants do its best to break the illiteracy/poverty cycle. When adults gain skills, they are able to support themselves and their families. They gain citizenship skills and consumer skills. They are more likely to be involved in their children’s education. They begin the move away from poverty to a better quality of life. LVSCNY turns no one away. We believe that every learner deserves to achieve their personal and professional goals and one to one tutoring is by far the single most effective way toward those goals.
Literacy Volunteers of America is a not-for-profit organization which provides a variety of free services to help people achieve personal goals through literacy. We consider it our mission to: foster and enhance family literacy through the efforts of a corps of LVA trained volunteer tutors to adults functioning at the lowest literacy levels, and to further proficiency in English as a Second Language for those who wish it, free of charge; all in an effort to stay the rising tide of illiteracy and improve the quality of life in Sullivan County .
